About

Located about 10 km from Pitești, on DN 7, the Golești Museum of Viticulture and Pomology is a unique historical site in Romania, where visitors can explore both a boyar courtyard and a complete traditional village, with households, a church, a school, a town hall, and an inn.

In the center of a boyar courtyard, full of greenery, stands the mansion built in 1640. Here you can learn how the Golești boyars lived in the 19th century and what were the major historical events related to this place and this boyar family, such as the Revolutions of 1821 and 1848, the Union of the Romanian Principalities, and the accession of Carol I as ruler. The throne of the four kings of Romania is on display in the mansion. Here we can also visit the Golești School—the first modern school teaching in Romanian, which operated between 1826 and 1830—the ethnography and folk art section of Argeș County, and the history section.

In front of the Golești museum complex stands the Golești Holy Trinity Church, a unique monument in Argeș County, built in Moldavian style with late Gothic architectural influences. The church and bell tower, remarkable historical monuments, bear witness to the history written by the Golești family.

Beyond the defensive walls of the manor, you can stroll through a traditional village, whose households represent all the important ethnographic areas of Romania. The museum covers an area of 14 hectares, with over 30 peasant households on display.

Within the Open-Air Ethnographic Museum, we find the village hearth, households, craft workshops, as well as tools and wine-making equipment.

In wine-growing and fruit-growing areas, pimnițe (storage rooms) were very important, serving as storage spaces for wine and brandy barrels, for tools used in plantations, and for instruments used to process grapes and various fruits. The pimnițe in the Golești Museum are built of massive oak beams, with one, two, or three rooms. They are covered with shingles, shakes, or vine twigs. The buried or semi-buried structures used to store vessels with borhot and in which the brandy boiler was installed are called poverne or velnițe. Linuri, teascuri, and 200-year-old barrels are displayed next to the cooper's house. Teascuri are mechanical instruments for extracting must from grapes, while linuri, which are much simpler, required direct action by the winegrowers, namely treading the grapes with their feet. Depending on the traditions of each ethnographic area, either young women or young men were allowed to climb into the wine press and crush the grapes.

In addition to historical and ethnographic exhibitions, the Golești Museum has a park with centuries-old trees, a playground, and a riding arena for horses and ponies, offering a variety of activities for all ages.

Between the manor park and the open-air museum, like an old crossroads inn, between the world of the boyars and that of the peasants, the terrace awaits its guests. Museum visitors can stop on their journey to enjoy delicious doughnuts, refreshing natural juices, ice cream, coffee, and other delicacies. Next to the terrace is the playground, zip line, and pony rides. The second playground is located in the open-air museum, next to the bowling alley. Young visitors can spend time outdoors enjoying the swings, slide, and seesaws in the park.

The zip line in Golești Park awaits brave children with a spirit of adventure. It is 60 meters long and supports a maximum weight of 50 kg. The museum provides all the necessary protective equipment: helmet, harness, carabiner.
At the Golești Museum, horse and pony riding takes place in a special setting. In the equestrian park or in the manor park, riders can enjoy both the fresh air and the beauty of the trees, fruit trees, and flowers, so dear to the ladies of the Golescu family.

One of the attractions of the Open Air Section is the bowling alley. Located in the immediate vicinity of the inn and the playground, the bowling alley is intended for both children and adults. The pins, balls, and the entire structure are made of wood. There is no charge for access and use. Bowling develops motor skills, coordination, and competitive spirit, but above all, it is great fun.

The Golești Museum has an attractive and diverse offering for developing the creative side and artistic sense of its visitors, whether students or adults. Various themed creative workshops are organized at the Golești Museum.
Opening hours: daily, Tuesday to Sunday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (winter: November 1 to March 31)
