About
A strategic road built between 1970 and 1974, Transfăgărășan (DN 7C) connects Pitești to Sibiu, with a length of 151 km.
The road passes by the Vidraru Dam and continues winding its way up to an altitude of 2000 meters, through the alpine pass, towards the heights of Făgăraș.
From here, the road descends to Arpașu de Jos, Sibiu County, where it connects with DN1.
The Transfăgărășan is the most grandiose work of its kind in our country. It crosses over 830 bridges and 27 viaducts. The Capra-Bâlea Tunnel, the longest road tunnel in the country, is 887 m long, has a sidewalk for pedestrians, and is electrically lit and ventilated. As soon as it enters Sibiu County, the Transfăgărășan reaches Cabana Bâlea Lac, located at an altitude of 2,027 m, on a small peninsula of the Bâlea glacial lake. On this route, you can stop anytime to eat or stay in one of the many cabins or simply admire the wild beauty of "the most beautiful road in the world," as some journalists have called it.
* Warning! Do not stop to feed or film the bears, as they are dangerous! If you get lost in the mountains, call for help from the Argeș mountain rescuers, who are always on duty at the Cota 2000 Refuge. It is also important to know that the mountain peony is an endangered species, protected by law. So please do not pick it. To keep the environment clean, please collect your trash when you leave.
Please note that the road is dangerous, with numerous hairpin bends, curves, and tunnels, so the recommended maximum speed is 40 km/h.
