Capra Lake – pearl of the Fagaras Mountains

One of the most beautiful lakes on the territory of our country is located on the southern slope of the Fagaras Massif. Capra Lake is a glacial lake hidden in the heart of the Fagaras Mountains, at an altitude of 2230 meters and has a maximum depth of about 10-11 meters. From Capra Lake springs the Capra stream, which descends to the south and, just before the Transfagarasan, forms the beautiful Capra Waterfall. The lake occupies a total area of 1.80 hectares and has an irregular, almost round shape. For those who want to visit the Transfagarasan area and the Fagaras Mountains, Capra Lake is a tourist attraction that should not be missing from the list of natural objectives in the area.

Vidraru Dam and Accumulation Lake

Built between 1960 and 1966 for electricity production, Vidraru Dam is the largest arch dam in our country. Vidraru Dam forms upstream a lake with a length of 14 kilometers and an area of 870 hectares. Vidraru Lake and Dam is a point of great tourist attraction. The clean air, the clear water of a piercing blue, the beauty of nature and the soothing view define this place as excellent for relaxation. 

Caltun Lake

Caltun Lake is a glacial lake located northeast of the Negoiu peak in the Fagaras Mountains, halfway between Negoiu Chalet and Balea Lac chalet, in Caltun cauldron, at the foot of Caltun Peak. The lake is located at an altitude of 2135 m, has an area of 7 751 sqm, and the maximum depth of 11.8 m.

Buda Lake in the Fagaras Mountains

Buda Lake is a lake of glacial origin located in the central part of the Fagaras Mountains. It is situated at an altitude of 2055 m, on an area of 0.40 hectares, being surrounded by the Buda peaks, Arpasul Mare and Arpasul Mic. From it originates the Buda Valley, which, together with the Capra Valley, forms the Arges River. Buda Lake has the status of a natural monument, being declared a protected natural area in 2000 and fully included in the nature reserve Golul Alpin Moldoveanu – Capra. The access to Buda Lake can be made from the main ridge, right of the Nerlinger monument. 

Scarisoara Galbena Lake in Fagaras Mountains

Galbena Lake or Galbena Scarisoara, as it is also known, is located on the southern slope of Fagaras, in the Scarisoara-Galbena cauldron, at an altitude of 2200 meters. It has an area of 1.2 ha and a depth of 9 meters. Located east of the Scarisoara and Galbena massifs towards the Rea Valley, the lake, of glacial origin, is the largest and most spectacular of the four existing lakes in Caldarusa and Caldarea Galbenei. The lake is a protected area of national interest, being declared a monument of nature. The nature reserve includes both the lake of glacial origin (water shine) and its surrounding area. 

Zarna Lake in the Fagaras Mountains

Monument of nature, Lake Zarna is a protected area of national interest, located in the southern part of the Fagaras Mountains, in the basin of the Doamnei River, near the river Zarna, one of its two tributaries. Lake Zarna is located at 1,980 m altitude, has an area of 0.50 hectares and 2 m maximum depth. It is a lake of glacial origin fed by the waters of some springs and those formed by melting snow. 

Access to the lake is made on the routes:
  • Breaza – Chalet Urlea – Vf. Santa – Curmatura Zarnei – Lake Zarna
  • Slatina – on River Lady – Lake Vasalatu – Gura Vailor – confluence with River Leaota – Valley Leaota – Lake Zarna 2 – Lake Zarna
  • Cabana Urlea – Curmatura Zarnei – Lacul Zarnei
  • Nucsoara - Zarna Valley - Zarna Lake

Avrig Lake

Avrig Lake, a glacial treasure in the Fagaras Mountains, offers a charming escape for outdoor enthusiasts. Accessible through a scenic hiking route, the lake is surrounded by majestic peaks and supports a diversified ecosystem. It is at an altitude of 2011 m. The surface of the lake is 1.47 ha. The maximum depth is 4.5 m The lake has a somewhat trapezoidal shape, with a maximum length of 180 m, on the east-west direction. Its width, in the north-south direction, is about 100 m. In the lake originates the River Avrig. From a tourist point of view, Avrig Lake is halfway between Suru cottage and Negoiu cottage.

The Pecineagu Lake and Dam

Pecineagu Dam is located on the upper course of the Dambovita River, in a depression between the Piatra Craiului Mountains and the Iezer-Papusa mountains. It is at an altitude of 1117 meters, is considered the largest dam of acramonte in Europe and is among the top 10 in the world. It has an area of 182 hectares and can accumulate up to 63 million cubic meters of water. The dam has a height of 107 m and a length at the canopy of 267 m. The Pecineagu Dam is relatively easy to reach, from Campulung to Brasov on DN73, to the village of Podul Dambovitei. Just 25 kilometers from the dam, you have to go through a cobbled road that passes through the village of Satic, one of the most beautiful in the area.

Lake Învârtita- Nucșoara

In Nucsoara commune is the Spinita Lake, the largest karst lake formed on gypsum from our country. Located at an altitude of 814 m, in the region of subcarpathian flies between the Valsan River and Doamnei River, the lake was declared a monument of nature and is included in the area of Magura-Nucsoara nature reserve. The lake has an area of 2.2 ha and a depth of 5 m and was formed in a doline on gypsum, by dissolution, then underwent pressing processes. The water of the lake has sulfurous springs and sludge with physical-therapeutic properties.

Iezer Lake, the only glacial lake in the Iezer Massif - Papusa

Located in the Carpathian chain, the southern major group, the Iezer Mountains – Doll offers an unforgettable route with breathtaking landscapes. The Iezer Mountains rise between the upper courses of the Doamnei and Dambovitei River, which delimits them to the north, northwest and west, to the high peaks of Fagaras, as well as to the east, to the ridge of Piatra Craiului. The highest point is the Red Peak, located in the center of the massif, having an altitude of 2,469 m. Due to its location much further south of the Southern Carpathian line, the massif rewards through the spectacular landscapes offered on the surrounding mountains. At an altitude of 2135 meters, under the peak of Iezerul Mare, inside the massif is Iezeru Mare Lake, a glacial lake located in a cauldron guarded by empty and wild peaks. Close to Lake Iezer is the Iezer Refuge (2165 m altitude), along the route being the Cross of the Athenaeum.

The dam and the Lake of accumulation Rausor

Rausor Dam is located on the River of the Fair, at a distance of 7.5 km from Leresti and 14 km from Campulung Muscel. The dam, built in 1985, aims to supply water, produce electricity and defend against flooding. Being located in the middle of nature, the Rausor Dam is one of the favorite destinations for tourists, especially because nearby is the Voina Chalet, where you can climb the mountain trails leading to the Iezer Peak and the Old Peak from the Iezer-Papusa Mountains.
