About
The Dâmbovicioara Gorges and the Dâmbovicioara Cave are the most important karst phenomena in Piatra Craiului. The Dâmbovicioara Gorges stretch over a length of about two kilometres, being the most spectacular part, with a truly amazing appearance. The straight walls of the valley seem to be trying to unite in certain sectors, exceeding the height of 200 meters. Over time, at the Dâmbovicioara Gorges were recorded sequences for famous films, among which the beloved series “All sails up!“, a film adaptation after the novel by writer Radu Tudoran.
The Dâmbovicioara Cave is located near the road that crosses the Dâmbovicioara Gorges. With a length of over 250 meters, the cave has the appearance of a branching gallery, its route being slightly ascending. The cave can be easily crossed, having the ceiling higher than the structure of man (about 2 meters). It has been known since before 1579, when locals used it as a hideout against invaders. The cave would have been the place of recollection of a hermit, but also the hiding place of a bear, inside the cave being found fossil remains of the cave bear (Ursus spelaeus).
