Welcome to Argeș County!

Argeș County offers a unique travel experience to those who visit this land of fairy tale-from dream landscapes, relaxation in nature, tourist attractions, historical and cultural monuments, places that preserve the charm of the old village and stories that fascinate, up to the unmistakable hospitality of the people in Argeș and the perfect taste of the local traditional dishes.

In Argeș, you will discover the most spectacular mountain area in the country, with glacial lakes and imposing waterfalls, the splendour of the Făgăraș mountains, with Moldoveanu and Negoiu peaks, the picturesque Rucăr-Dâmbovicioara area, numerous churches and monasteries, traditions and customs which are hundreds of years old. In the northern area of the county, one can notice, in the heart of the mountain, some of the jewels of the Argeș tourism: the Poienari Fortress– the real fortress of Dracula, the Vidraru Dam and artificial lake and the spectacular Transfăgărășan road, which meanders through the mountains in an amazing natural landscape.

Everywhere in Argeș, there are treasures of Romanian history: from evidence of prehistoric populations and Roman castrums, to the first capitals of Wallachia – Câmpulung and Curtea de Argeș. At Câmpulung, there is the Jidova Roman Castrum – a UNESCO monument, the most important and best preserved military construction on the route of Limes Transalutanus. At Curtea de Argeș, the former seat of Wallachia, you will discover some of the most valuable constructions of art and architecture, among which the Curtea de Argeș Monastery, the Episcopal Palace, the Princely Saint Nicholas Church and the New Archdiocesan and Royal Cathedral.

Argeș is the place where the most famous Wallachia rulers have resided and from where came important people in the history and culture of the Romanian nation. In one of his great works, the national historian Nicolae Iorga uses the phrase “Romania from Argeș”, as a way to highlight the important role in our history of those who were originally from Argeș. The two representative families of Romanian boyars, the Brătianu family and the Golescu family, both from Argeș, had an overwhelming role in the formation of the modern Romanian state. Argeș is the county that gave most of the prime ministers: four from the Brătianu family, two from the Golescu family, Armand Călinescu and Ion Antonescu. Of these, Ion C. Brătianu was the longest-serving prime minister in Romanian history (between 1876 and 1888).
